These images are from a case last month. This pony lives many hours away from any facilities where Equine Surgery is performed and the owner found her horse with severe colic signs, unresponsive to medical management. It was clear from the phonecalls with the owner and the local veterinarian that the horse was in some distress and it wasn't looking good if they couldn't safely transport the horse to the clinic. Fortunately another local veterinarian was lucky enough to feel something "release" whilst performing another rectal examination and the horse miraculously stopped colicking. The owner was still keen to have the horse checked over and arranged to bring him over to a friends place close to the clinic for observation and assessment. The horse was clinically normal and a general examination did not detect anything out of the ordinary. An abdominal ultrasound was performed and an abnormal mass was detected in the left caudal abdomen. A rectal exam was then performed and the mass was also felt - about 8 - 10cm in diameter. Given the previous history it was felt that this mass probably would have caused the previous colic signs if it had managed to cause a partial obstruction of the bowel. Fortunately the animal was insured and the insurance company agreed to an exploratory surgery. A mass matching the pre-surgical findings was found attached to the small colon - consistent with a lipoma. This was easily removed and the horse made an excellent, uncomplicated recovery from surgery. This horse was extremely lucky - not only had the lipoma previously freed itself, but we were able to detect it and remove it before if caused a serious bowel injury. Lipomas are on of the more common causes of surgical colics (usually pony breeds, geldings, slightly overweight...) and they usually managed to encircle a loop of bowel cutting off the blood supply. The bowel quickly becomes non-viabe and invariably has to be removed. The surgical complications following bowel resection and the toxic effects of the damaged bowel has on the cardiovascular system often makes the horse very sick following the surgery, leading to increased costs in post operative care with intravenous fluid support and intensive nursing. It is rare that we get to perform an elective, if not prophylactic colic surgery - for a fraction of the cost and minimal aftercare required. One lucky pony... ... See MoreSee Less

Another cracking 2yo by Little Wonder. She too is being broken in. And still positive reviews from the stable and owner of her. He is leaving outstanding foals which can’t be faulted. Very easy to do anything with in every aspect. Get your mare to him for your piece of this exceptional family.
